A reputation for excellence
Since the beginning of his career in 1968, Dr. Harold Young has been a role model for providing compassionate patient care. His dedication to the education of future neurosurgeons has led to the development of one of the top training programs in the country.
As chair of Neurosurgery at VCU since 1983, Young has created a surgical team that is among the nation’s leading head-trauma programs. Under his leadership, the Department of Neurosurgery has generated more than $25 million in sponsored research from the National Institutes of Health.
As a vital force in neuro-oncology and neurotrauma, Dr. Young has written more than 230 publications and abstracts. He is also a recognized national lecturer and a member of more than a dozen major medical organizations. Dr. Young’s professional awards include the Bronze Star and Meritorious Medal in 1970 for his Vietnam tour as chief of neurosurgery with the 312th Evacuation Hospital in Chu Lai. In addition, he received the VCU School of Medicine Dean’s Award for Community Service in 1993, was named Clinician of the Year in 1994 and received VCU’s Distinguished Educator Award in 1997.
